YVES SAINT LAURENT Sunset Medium in Smooth Leather Black

$2,300.00 AUD

Pre-owned YVES SAINT LAURENT Sunset Medium in Smooth Leather Black

A refined and versatile piece from Saint Laurent, the Sunset Medium in smooth black leather pairs the maison's clean architectural lines with an adjustable chain and leather strap for shoulder or crossbody wear. The leather retains its shape and finish well throughout.

The exterior is clean and shows gentle signs of use, with very faint marks visible on the front panel upon close inspection only. Corners and edges remain intact. The hardware retains its finish, with slight hairline scratches visible on close inspection, consistent with light everyday wear.

The interior leather flap is clean and the suede lining is clean, with some dust present and mild signs of use consistent with normal wear. No stains or odours are present.

Please examine all photos carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description.

Please note: colour may appear different in photos and in person due to lighting and screen settings; be mindful of this when assessing the shade.

Pre-loved, this piece comes with an authenticity certificate. We video-record each step of packing and provide end-to-end tracking to maintain a secure chain of custody from our showroom to your door.

This piece is pre-owned and preloved, so mild signs of use are to be expected. We’ve photographed and described every notable mark to ensure you know exactly what you’re getting before you buy.

Why We Love

Why We Love the Saint Laurent Sunset Medium in Black Smooth Leather

There is a test we apply to any bag that claims to be a wardrobe staple. Can you carry it to a Monday meeting, a Friday dinner and a Sunday lunch without it looking wrong in any of them? Very few pass. This one does, and it manages it without ever looking like it is trying.

The house that made black a discipline

Yves Saint Laurent built a career on the idea that severity could be seductive. Le Smoking, the tuxedo jacket he cut for women in 1966, is the clearest statement of it: strict tailoring, hard lines, no ornament, and an effect that was far more powerful than anything soft or decorative could have achieved.

That instinct still runs through the house. Saint Laurent under its modern designers has stayed committed to a particular kind of restraint, where black is not the absence of a decision but the whole decision, and where a piece earns its impact through proportion rather than through detail.

The Sunset belongs squarely to that lineage. It is essentially a rectangle with a flap, a chain and a small metal monogram, and that is the point. Everything that could have been added has been left off.

Proportion, which is the actual design

Look at the Sunset next to its competitors and what stands out is how carefully the shape has been resolved.

At roughly 22 cm wide and 16 cm tall it sits in the sweet spot between a mini bag that holds nothing and a shoulder bag that reads as luggage. The width to height ratio is close to the classic envelope proportion, which the eye finds naturally settled, and the 7 cm depth gives it enough body to hold a real day's contents without ever bulging into a pillow.

The flap runs the full width and the closure sits low, which visually lengthens the bag and keeps it from looking boxy. The chain attaches at the top corners rather than through side gussets, so the bag hangs flat against the body instead of splaying.

None of this is showy work. It is the kind of design you only notice by comparison, when you put it beside a bag that got the proportions slightly wrong and suddenly cannot stop seeing it.

Smooth leather, and what it asks of you

The Sunset comes in several finishes and the smooth calfskin is the most demanding of them, which is also why it looks the best.

Grained and textured leathers hide things. The grain disperses light, disguises small scratches, and forgives handling. Smooth leather does none of that. It shows every mark, which means the leather itself has to be good enough to survive the scrutiny, and the finishing has to be immaculate, because there is nowhere for a rushed edge or an uneven seam to hide.

What you get in return is depth. Smooth black calfskin has a liquid quality under light that grained leather cannot produce, a soft sheen across the panels that makes the bag read as expensive from across a room without a single visible logo doing the work.

It also ages honestly. Smooth leather softens and develops a faint patina at the corners and along the flap edge, which on a well kept bag reads as character rather than damage.

The chain, and why it earns its place

Chain straps are usually a compromise. They look elegant and they dig into a shoulder, or they are comfortable and they look cheap.

Saint Laurent's solution on the Sunset is a chain interrupted by a leather section, so the part that actually sits on the shoulder is leather rather than metal. It is a simple idea and it makes the bag genuinely wearable for a full day rather than for a dinner.

The strap is adjustable, which is the other thing that turns this from an occasion bag into a daily one. Worn long it is a crossbody, hands free, for a commute or an errand. Doubled and shortened it is a shoulder bag, sitting high and neat under a coat. That flexibility is the whole reason a bag this size can cover as much ground as it does.

Made properly, in Italy

Saint Laurent's leather goods are produced in Italy, and this example is stamped accordingly, dated August 2018.

That matters more on smooth leather than on almost any other material, for the reason given above. The panels have to be cut from consistent hide, the edges have to be painted and finished cleanly, and the stitch line has to run true, because every one of those things is visible. Italian leather manufacturing is where that standard is reliably met, and it is a large part of what you are paying for.

Honest wear

This example shows gentle use. Very faint marks are visible on the front panel on close inspection, the hardware carries slight hairline scratches, and the suede lining shows mild signs of use with some dust.

That is a bag that was carried and looked after, which on smooth leather is worth noting. Smooth calfskin punishes carelessness quickly and visibly, so a Sunset that has reached this age with a clean front panel and intact corners has had a careful owner. The interior tells the same story.

The case for pre-loved

A Sunset bought new is a considered purchase. Bought pre-loved in this condition, it is one of the more sensible entries into a house whose prices have moved a long way in the last decade.

We love this bag because it does the Saint Laurent thing properly. No pattern, no colour, no logo you can read across a street. Just a well drawn rectangle in very good black leather, on a strap that lets you wear it however the day requires.
