LOUIS VUITTON Vernis Alma BB Patent Leather Purple

$2,200.00 AUD

Pre-owned LOUIS VUITTON Vernis Alma BB Patent Leather Purple

Louis Vuitton Alma BB in Monogram Vernis patent leather, purple. Date code MIXXX3 — made in France, week 51 of 2013. The Alma's architectural dome silhouette is rendered here in high-shine embossed patent calfskin, finished with polished golden brass hardware, a double-zip top closure with padlock, rolled top handles and a removable leather shoulder strap for crossbody wear. Protective base studs, structured sides and a fully lined interior with a flat patch pocket complete the design. Compact at approximately 23.5 x 17.5 x 11.5 cm, it holds a phone, cardholder, keys, compact and lipstick with ease.

Condition: Almost new. Exterior shows no signs of use — only faint hairline scratches visible upon very close inspection; the patent leather is clean and free of marks. Interior is very clean with no stains, marks or tears. Retains its shape beautifully and presents as barely carried.

Please examine all photos carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description.

Please note: colour may appear different in photos and in person due to lighting and screen settings; be mindful of this when assessing the shade.

Pre-loved and 100 % authentic, this piece comes with an authenticity certificate. We video-record each step of packing and provide end-to-end tracking to maintain a secure chain of custody from our showroom to your door.

Why We Love

A silhouette with ninety years of history

The Alma is one of the very few handbag shapes that can claim genuine architectural lineage. Its story begins in 1934, when Gaston-Louis Vuitton designed the Squire bag — a domed, structured carryall named, in its later incarnation, after the Pont de l'Alma, the bridge spanning the Seine in the heart of Paris. When the house formalised it into the permanent collection in 1992 under the name Alma, it arrived already fully resolved: no trend cycle produced it, and no trend cycle has been able to date it. That is a rare thing in handbags. Where so many designs are legible as belonging to a specific decade, the Alma reads simply as Louis Vuitton — instantly recognisable across a room, yet never loud about it.

The appeal is partly geometric. The curved dome top, the taut vertical sides, the way the twin rolled handles sit in perfect proportion to the body — it is a bag that holds its own posture. It does not slump, sag or need to be arranged. Set it on a café table or a desk and it stands, upright and composed, which is a small daily pleasure that owners tend to underestimate until they've lived with it.

Vernis: the material that made it a collector's piece

Monogram Vernis arrived in 1998, when Marc Jacobs took the house's most familiar signature and did something quietly radical with it — embossing the Monogram into glossy patent calf leather rather than printing it onto coated canvas. The result is a Monogram you read with light rather than contrast. Depending on the angle, the pattern surfaces and recedes; in bright daylight it flashes like glass, in low light it deepens into something almost liquid. It is the most tactile expression of the Monogram the house has ever produced, and it turned the Alma from a classic into an object people collect.

Vernis also behaves differently from canvas in the way it ages. It doesn't develop patina — it either stays pristine or it doesn't. Which is precisely why a Vernis piece in this condition matters so much more than a canvas one in the same grade. Finding an Alma BB where the patent surface is genuinely clean, unmarked, free of colour transfer, and still holding its high-gloss finish is uncommon. Most examples that come to market carry the tell-tale signs of everyday life — scuffing at the base corners, ink or denim transfer along the sides, softening at the handles. This one has none of that.

The colour

Purple is the shade that Vernis was arguably made for. Patent leather gives colour a depth that matte finishes can't — the light travels into it and comes back richer, so a purple that would read flat in calfskin reads here as jewel-toned, closer to amethyst or plum than to anything primary. It is also, unexpectedly, one of the most wearable colours in the spectrum. It sits beautifully against black, navy, camel, grey, cream and denim; it flatters warm and cool complexions alike; it works in daylight and after dark. It is a colour that reads as considered rather than as a statement — the sign of someone who chose a shade rather than defaulting to one.

Purple Vernis shades are also produced seasonally, retired, and never repeated in exactly the same tone. Unlike the permanent Monogram canvas line, a purple Vernis Alma is a closed edition by definition. Once the season's colour is gone, the only way to acquire it is on the secondary market — which is exactly the mechanism that has kept discontinued Vernis colourways so resilient in value.

BB: the size that made it modern

The BB, introduced in 2012, is the size that brought the Alma into contemporary daily use. At roughly 23.5 cm across, it is genuinely compact without being decorative — phone, cardholder, keys, compact, lipstick and sunglasses all fit comfortably. Crucially, it comes with a removable leather strap, so it converts from a top-handle bag to a hands-free crossbody in seconds. That single feature is what allows one bag to carry a whole day: handles for the office or lunch, strap for travel, errands, and evening.

Why this one, and why now

Condition is the entire argument in Vernis, and this piece is as close to unworn as the secondary market realistically offers. The exterior shows no signs of use, with only faint hairline marks visible under close inspection. The interior is very clean — no stains, no marks, no tears. The structure is intact, the hardware bright, the gloss unbroken.

What you're acquiring is a French-made 2013 Alma BB in a retired purple Vernis, in near-new condition, in the size that has become the most in-demand of the family — a bag that will look exactly as current in ten years as it does today, because it has already spent ninety years proving that it can.
