Preowned GOYARD St Louis PM Tote Red | Luxe Again Maison

GOYARD St Louis PM Tote Red

$2,600.00 AUD

Preloved  GOYARD St Louis PM Tote Red

This Goyard St Louis PM in signature red Goyardine is presented in excellent pre-loved condition, with clear evidence of careful ownership and light use.

The exterior is beautifully preserved. The Goyardine canvas is free of marks, stains and discolouration, with the hand-painted chevron pattern remaining crisp and vibrant throughout. The natural leather trim, handles and reinforced corners are fully intact, with no cracking, splitting or lifting, and show only the gentle patina expected of the material.

The interior is clean overall and holds its shape well, with just a couple of faint stains to the lining — minor, unobtrusive and consistent with normal use.

The accompanying pouch is included and presents beautifully, clean both inside and out.

An excellent example of an enduring everyday classic, ready to be worn and enjoyed immediately.

Please examine all photos carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description.

Please note: colour may appear different in photos and in person due to lighting and screen settings; be mindful of this when assessing the shade.

Why We Love

Why We Love the Goyard St Louis PM in Red

There are handbags that announce themselves, and there are handbags that are simply recognised. The Goyard St Louis belongs firmly to the second category — and in red, it manages the rare trick of being both discreet and unforgettable at the same time. It is one of the few totes we never struggle to place with a new owner, and one of the few we're always quietly sorry to see leave.

Here's why it earns that affection.

A house that has never chased attention

Maison Goyard's story begins in Paris in the early 1790s, when the workshop that would become Goyard was already making trunks for a clientele of aristocrats and travellers. François Goyard took the reins in 1853, and it was his son Edmond who, in the 1890s, created the material the house is now known for: Goyardine.

That chevron pattern is not printed in the ordinary sense. It is built up by hand, dot by dot, in a technique the house has guarded for more than a century — which is why no two panels are ever quite identical, and why the pattern has a depth that flat-printed imitations never manage. It was also, remarkably, a piece of quiet family symbolism: the interlocking motif is widely understood as a nod to the Goyard family's origins among log drivers on France's rivers, the pattern echoing stacked timber.

Goyard has never advertised. It has never sold online in the conventional way. Its boutique network remains deliberately small. For a certain kind of buyer, that restraint is the entire point.

The tote that made Goyard famous again

The St Louis arrived in the late 1990s, taking its name from the Île Saint-Louis, the small island in the Seine at the heart of old Paris. It was an unusually modern proposition for a house so steeped in trunk-making tradition: an open-top tote with no closure, no hardware, no structure, and no lining.

That last detail is the genius of it. Because the St Louis is unlined, it is genuinely reversible — canvas out for the full Goyardine effect, or turned inside out for something almost anonymous. It also makes the bag astonishingly light. Pick one up empty and it barely registers in the hand. Fill it with a laptop, a water bottle, a folder and a change of shoes, and it still doesn't punish your shoulder the way a structured leather tote will.

The PM is the size that does the most work. The GM is the travel bag, the airport bag, the beach bag. The PM is the everyday one: substantial enough for a working day, neat enough that it doesn't overwhelm a smaller frame or look absurd at lunch. It is the size most people actually reach for, which is exactly why it's the harder of the two to find pre-loved.

Why red, specifically

Goyard's palette is one of the house's real pleasures, and red is among the most enduring choices in it. It is not a shy colour, but it is not a loud one either — the shade sits closer to a deep, slightly dusty vermilion than to anything neon, and the black chevron overlay tempers it further. The result reads as considered rather than attention-seeking.

Practically, red is the colour that makes a neutral wardrobe work harder. Navy, grey, camel, black, denim, white linen — the bag lifts all of them, and it lifts them without needing anything else to coordinate. It photographs beautifully. It is easy to find in a crowded room and easy to spot in the back of a wardrobe. And unlike the seasonal colours that come and go, red has never once looked dated on this bag.

It gets better, not worse

The natural leather trim on a St Louis arrives pale and slowly deepens with handling and daylight, moving through honey to a rich amber-brown. This is not damage; it is the bag's biography. A red St Louis with a well-developed patina on the handles and corners looks better than a brand-new one, and most seasoned collectors will tell you so without hesitation.

The Goyardine itself is coated canvas — resilient, water-resistant, and far more forgiving of real life than the material's delicacy might suggest. These bags are made to be used, and they wear their use well.

The quiet case for buying pre-loved

Goyard's limited distribution means the primary market can be genuinely difficult to navigate. The secondary market is where most people find their St Louis — and, in a well-cared-for example, where they find one that has already earned its patina.

Values hold remarkably steadily. A red St Louis PM in excellent condition is not a bag that depreciates quietly in a wardrobe; it is a bag that keeps its place.
