GOYARD St Louis PM Tote Navy Blue

$2,850.00 AUD

Preloved  GOYARD St Louis PM Tote Navy Blue

Goyard St Louis PM tote in navy blue Goyardine canvas with tonal leather trim. The maison's chevron motif is applied by hand using the traditional method, giving the canvas a subtle dimensionality and artisanal irregularity that printed patterns cannot imitate. Finished with leather-trimmed rolled handles, hand-stitched detailing and the house's characteristically restrained hardware. The St Louis is Goyard's celebrated lightweight open tote — unlined, exceptionally light in the hand, deceptively capacious, and able to fold down nearly flat when not in use. Supplied with its matching detachable snap pouch for cards, keys and small essentials.

The canvas is free of marks and stains and the leather is fully intact, with no cracking, peeling or edge wear. Interior is clean overall, with a couple of faint stains the only noted imperfection. The accompanying pouch is clean inside and out. Shape, structure and handle integrity are all excellent throughout.

Please examine all photos carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description.

Please note: colour may appear different in photos and in person due to lighting and screen settings; be mindful of this when assessing the shade.

Why We Love

Luxury that refuses to explain itself

Goyard is the rarest thing in modern luxury: a house that has never needed to sell you anything. Its origins reach back to 1792, and it took the Goyard name in 1853 when François Goyard inherited the Parisian workshop — which makes it older than nearly every name it now sits beside. In the 170 years since, it has run essentially no advertising, signed essentially no celebrity ambassadors, and maintained a deliberately tiny footprint of boutiques worldwide. For most of its history you couldn't buy one online at all. You went to the shop, and if what you wanted wasn't there, you waited.

This is not scarcity engineered by a marketing department. It is simply how the house has always operated, and the result is a bag that behaves differently in the world than other luxury goods do. There is no logo to read. Nothing about it performs for a room. It is recognised only by people who already know what it is — and that, increasingly, is the entire point. In a market where every famous monogram has been photographed to exhaustion and copied into meaninglessness, a Goyard says something by saying nothing at all.

Goyardine: applied by hand, not printed

The chevron pattern was created in 1892 by Edmond Goyard, drawing on the stacked-log motif associated with the family's timber-trading roots. It is built from thousands of minute dots that resolve into an interlocking herringbone, and — crucially — it is applied by hand rather than machine-printed. Look closely and you see it: a faint texture, a slight variation in the lay of the pattern, the fingerprint of a person rather than a press.

The canvas itself is a linen, cotton and hemp composite, coated for resilience. It is water-resistant, it does not crack the way coated leather eventually does, and it is remarkably light. Goyardine is one of the few luxury materials that genuinely improves the more it is used, softening slightly without ever losing its structure or colour.

The St Louis: the tote that removed everything unnecessary

Named for Île Saint-Louis, the quieter of the Seine's two islands, the St Louis is Goyard's most-loved design and its cleverest. Its brilliance lies entirely in what isn't there. No lining. No zip. No closure. No internal compartments, no hardware furniture, no structure imposed on the canvas. What remains is a canvas body, two leather handles, and almost no weight.

That weightlessness is what converts people. Most luxury totes ask you to carry the bag before you carry your things; the St Louis doesn't. Empty, it weighs almost nothing and folds nearly flat. Loaded, it takes a laptop, a folder, a water bottle and a jumper without straining or losing its line. It is the bag that ends up being used far more than anything else its owner owns, because using it costs nothing.

The PM is the more refined of the two principal sizes — genuinely roomy but still elegant enough for dinner, where the GM begins to read as travel luggage. And the detachable snap pouch is the single concession to organisation the design allows: cards, keys and lipstick live there rather than migrating to the bottom of an unlined bag.

Navy: the most quietly correct colour Goyard makes

Goyardine appears in a wide spectrum, and navy occupies a particular position within it. Black is the default and the safest; the brights are wonderful but declarative. Navy does something neither manages — it reads as deep, sober and expensive at a distance, then reveals its chevron texture at close range, the tonal pattern surfacing subtly against the dark ground.

Practically, it is the most versatile colour in the range. Navy carries the same go-anywhere neutrality as black but with warmth and depth that black flattens out, and it sits beautifully against denim, camel, cream, grey, white and every shade of tailoring. It is also, for many collectors, the colour that best suits the St Louis specifically — a design whose whole character is understatement, in the shade that understates most gracefully. Navy is produced in far smaller volumes than black and appears less frequently on the secondary market, which makes finding one in this condition genuinely uncommon.

Reading the condition

This is where this particular bag makes its case. The canvas is free of marks and stains, and — the detail that matters most on a St Louis — the leather is fully intact. Handles are the wear point on every open tote ever made; they carry the entire load and take every contact. Finding a St Louis with leather showing no cracking, peeling or edge wear is the difference between a bag you'll enjoy for a decade and a bag that will need a trip to the atelier. Inside, a couple of faint stains are the only noted imperfections, and the pouch is clean inside and out.

Why this one

A navy St Louis PM with its pouch, clean canvas, intact leather, and the kind of condition that lets a buyer skip straight to the good part. It's the lightest great tote made, in the most versatile shade of the most discreet pattern in luxury — and it will look exactly as right in fifteen years as it does today, because it was never trying to look of its moment in the first place.
