LOUIS VUITTON Neo Cabby MM Noir Monogram Denim Leather Top Handle Bag

$2,200.00 AUD

Pre-owned LOUIS VUITTON Neo Cabby MM Noir Monogram Denim Leather Top Handle Bag

Louis Vuitton Neo Cabby MM in Noir Monogram Denim with black leather trim. Date code VIXXX8 — made in France, week 24 of 2008. Built from jacquard-woven denim in which the Monogram is woven into the cloth rather than printed, giving the pattern a soft, textural depth unique to this discontinued line. Finished with golden brass hardware, rolled leather top handles, a two-way zip top closure and side press-studs that cinch or release the silhouette from slouchy hobo to full open tote. Includes a removable, adjustable leather-trimmed shoulder strap for hands-free wear, plus a roomy fabric-lined interior with internal pockets.

Exterior shows gentle signs of use — minimal scuffing and light oxidisation to the hardware, and slight peeling to the handle leather. The denim canvas itself is free of marks or stains. Interior is clean, free of any stains or marks.

Please examine all photos carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description.

Please note: colour may appear different in photos and in person due to lighting and screen settings; be mindful of this when assessing the shade.

Why We Love

A Marc Jacobs experiment that became a collector's category

Monogram Denim arrived for Spring/Summer 2005, and it was one of the more quietly audacious things Marc Jacobs did during his tenure at Louis Vuitton. The idea was simple to describe and difficult to execute: take the most formal, most instantly recognisable luxury pattern in the world and render it in the most casual fabric in the world. Not printed onto denim — woven into it. The Monogram in this material is jacquard-woven, meaning the pattern is built into the structure of the cloth itself, which is why it has a soft, dimensional, almost tactile quality that no coated canvas can reproduce. Run your hand across it and you feel the Monogram before you see it.

The collection was a genuine phenomenon — waiting lists, magazine spreads, the full mid-2000s treatment — and then, as these things go, it was retired. Monogram Denim is no longer produced. Every piece that exists is a piece that already exists, and the population only shrinks from here. That is the fundamental collectibility argument, and it has been quietly strengthening for years.

Why Noir is the connoisseur's choice

Most people picture Monogram Denim in its original blue: bright, unmistakably 2005, unmistakably fun. The Noir is a different proposition entirely. In black, the woven Monogram becomes a tonal texture rather than a graphic — you read it as a rich, subtly patterned dark fabric first, and only on closer inspection resolve it into the LV motif. Paired with black leather trim and warm golden brass hardware, the effect is considerably more sophisticated than the blue and dramatically more versatile in a modern wardrobe. It goes with everything black goes with, which is to say everything.

It's also the harder version to find. Noir was produced in smaller numbers than the signature blue and tends to disappear from the market quickly when it surfaces. For a buyer who wants the collectibility of Monogram Denim without the overt nostalgia signalling, the Noir is the answer.

The Neo Cabby's clever engineering

The Neo Cabby is, structurally, one of the smartest bags of its era. The side press-studs are the key: fastened, they draw the sides in and give the bag a compact, curved, gathered hobo shape; released, they open it out into a genuinely capacious tote. It is effectively two bags in one silhouette, and the transformation takes about two seconds. The two-way zip top means the whole thing actually closes securely — a detail that unstructured totes almost never get right — and the rolled leather handles sit comfortably on the shoulder even when the bag is fully loaded.

Then there's the removable adjustable strap, which turns it into a crossbody. Between top handles, shoulder carry and crossbody, plus the cinched-or-open silhouette, this is a bag with more genuine configurations than almost anything else in the house's archive.

The MM is properly useful: laptop, notebook, water bottle, cosmetics, a change of shoes if the day demands it. It is a travel bag, a work bag and a weekend bag depending entirely on how you set the studs — and few bags in this price bracket ask so little of you while doing so much.

How the material ages — and why that matters here

Monogram Denim behaves like good denim, because it is good denim. It softens, drapes better with age, and forgives handling in a way rigid coated canvas doesn't. What it doesn't do well is stain — and this is exactly why the condition on this piece is worth emphasising. The canvas here is free of marks or stains, which is the single most important thing to get right on a denim piece and the thing most examples on the market fail on. Denim that has been through a decade and a half without picking up a stain is denim that was genuinely looked after.

The honest wear is elsewhere and it is all cosmetic: light oxidisation on the golden brass — the natural chemical darkening that all untreated brass hardware develops, and which many collectors actively prefer for its aged warmth — minimal scuffing, and slight peeling to the handle leather. None of it is structural. None of it affects how the bag closes, carries or holds its shape.

Why this one

A France-made 2008 Neo Cabby MM in the harder-to-find Noir, from a discontinued line that cannot be reissued, with the fabric — the part that actually determines value — clean and unmarked. The mid-2000s Louis Vuitton archive is currently in the middle of a serious revival, and Monogram Denim sits right at the centre of it. This is the version of that story with the least nostalgia and the most wearability, in a size and configuration that earns its place in daily rotation rather than a dust bag.
