FENDI Zucchino Classic Baguette Canvas x Leather SHW Navy Blue Bag

$2,200.00 AUD

Pre-owned FENDI Zucchino Classic Baguette Canvas x Leather SHW Navy Blue Bag

Fendi Baguette in navy blue Zucchino canvas with tonal leather trim. Zucchino is the house's miniature FF motif — a finer, more discreet interpretation of the Zucca logo, worked across the canvas so the pattern reads as texture at a distance and resolves into the double-F only up close. Finished with leather trim throughout, a leather logo flap and the Baguette's signature FF buckle closure, plus a short leather shoulder strap designed to be worn under the arm in the way that made the model famous. Clean, fully lined interior with an internal pocket. Designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi in 1997, the Baguette is the bag credited with creating the modern It bag.

Condition: Very good. Gentle signs of use; very faint marks on the canvas; scratches to the FF hardware buckle and the leather logo flap; cracks and peeling visible on the leather handle. Interior very clean, no visible marks or stains.

Please examine all photos carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description.

Please note: colour may appear different in photos and in person due to lighting and screen settings; be mindful of this when assessing the shade.

Pre-loved and 100 % authentic, this piece comes with an authenticity certificate. We video-record each step of packing and provide end-to-end tracking to maintain a secure chain of custody from our showroom to your door.

Why We Love

The bag that invented the category

Before 1997, handbags were accessories. After 1997, they were events — and the Baguette is the reason. Silvia Venturini Fendi designed it as a deliberate reaction against the enormous, utilitarian shoulder bags that dominated the mid-nineties: something small, something you tucked under your arm, something that behaved like jewellery rather than luggage. She named it for the way it is carried — clamped beneath the arm, exactly as a Parisian carries a baguette home from the boulangerie.

What followed is one of the few genuine phenomena in fashion history. Fendi produced hundreds upon hundreds of variations — beaded, embroidered, sequinned, woven, printed, in fur, in denim, in leather, in canvas — and each one sold out. Waiting lists ran into the thousands. It was the first bag people collected rather than merely bought, and it established the commercial logic the entire luxury industry has run on ever since: the seasonal, limited, must-have handbag. Every It bag since exists downstream of this one.

The Carrie effect

Its cultural moment was sealed on television. Sex and the City put the Baguette on Carrie Bradshaw's arm, and the scene in which she's mugged and protests, "It's a Baguette," is one of the most quoted fashion moments ever broadcast. That single line did what a decade of advertising couldn't — it turned a bag into a character.

Two and a half decades later, that association hasn't faded; it has appreciated. The Baguette is now understood as a genuine artefact of late-nineties and early-2000s culture, and the Y2K revival has driven a wave of collectors back to the originals. Fendi itself formally relaunched the model in 2019 to enormous demand and has kept it in production since — which has had the interesting effect of making the vintage-era examples more sought after, not less. The current bag confirms the design's importance; the original carries the history.

Zucchino: the connoisseur's Fendi print

Fendi's FF logo — designed by Karl Lagerfeld in 1965, reportedly in a matter of seconds, standing for Fun Furs — exists in two principal canvas scales. Zucca is the larger, bolder, more graphic version. Zucchino is the smaller one, and it is the more sophisticated of the two by a comfortable margin.

At the Zucchino scale, the FF stops functioning as a logo and starts functioning as a textile. From across a room you see a fine, dense, tonal weave; only at conversational distance does the double-F resolve. It gives the bag the discretion of a good tweed with the recognisability of a monogram, and it's why Zucchino pieces have aged so much better than the louder logo bags of the same era. It never looks like it's trying.

Navy, and why it's the smart choice

Zucchino appeared across a wide palette, and navy is among the most quietly wearable of them. Where the browns are classically Fendi and the brights are firmly of their moment, navy is simply a good colour — deep, cool, and neutral enough to disappear into a wardrobe rather than dictate terms to it.

Tonal navy also does something specific to the print: it lowers the contrast, softening the FF into pure texture and giving the whole bag a more grown-up register. It works with denim, black, white, cream, grey and every shade of tailoring, and it moves from daytime to evening without any adjustment. For a buyer who wants the Baguette's history without the Baguette's occasional loudness, navy Zucchino is precisely the answer.

How it actually wears

The Baguette's proportions are its secret weapon. The short strap holds it high and close, right at the waist, which flatters almost everyone — it creates a line rather than interrupting one. It is a small bag, but a genuinely usable one: phone, cardholder, keys, lipstick and sunglasses all sit comfortably, and the flap with its FF buckle closes securely over the lot. Slung under the arm with a coat, worn over a knit, carried to dinner — it is the rare small bag that never looks fussy.

Reading the condition honestly

The canvas — the part that determines a Zucchino bag's value — is essentially clean, with only very faint marks beneath the flap, an area largely concealed in wear. The interior is very clean, with no visible marks or stains at all, which on a bag of this vintage tells you a great deal about how it was stored.

The wear is where a Baguette always shows it: on the parts that get handled. There are scratches to the FF buckle and the leather logo flap — the buckle is touched every time the bag is opened, and the flap sits proud of the body — and the leather handle shows cracks and peeling. On a bag approaching its third decade, a strap that has softened and split is expected rather than exceptional; it is cosmetic rather than structural, and the Baguette's strap is a straightforward, well-understood repair for any competent leather specialist should a future owner wish to refresh it.

Nothing here is hidden, and nothing here compromises the bag's core: the canvas is sound, the interior immaculate, the shape intact.

Why this one

An original-era Baguette in the more refined Zucchino print, in the most wearable colour it came in, with clean canvas, a spotless interior, and honest wear confined to the touchpoints. It is a foundational object in fashion history that also happens to be a genuinely good small bag — and one of the very few pieces you can carry daily while owning something that belongs, quite legitimately, in a museum case.
